Starbound

by Martin Lettvin

An action adventure franchise which single-handedly sparked my interest in digital sound and game music. The second title in the series became a hallmark in PC gaming upon its debut in 1992, and was highly regarded for its eclectic soundtrack. Digital sound modules, rather than MIDI hardware, brought a unique quality of sound to gamers even without the use of dedicated sound cards by allowing for the playback of sophisticated audio patterns even on small internal PC speakers. It sort of blew my mind even as a kid, despite the fact that I had only the vaguest understanding of its technical concepts. This was the catalyst that sparked my imagination and changed the way I saw electronic music, and I've always dreamed of expanding on the themes explored in this rich story of interstellar exploration.
